Dream Job: IDEE
I am Sherry An, who grew up in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. My life is full of tactile experiences. I love to use my own hand to participate in every single step of my design process from picking wood from lumber yards, working in woodshops or experimenting different materials. I see furniture design as an opportunity of interactions and relationship building. A lot of joyful moments happen around the furniture we interact with. It could be a family quality time, or just simply reading a meaningful book yourself in a lovely afternoon. There is no right answer for any relationship, but we can always make it better, and this is how I start with my design. There is nothing so wrong that I need to definitely design something to change the world, but with my sense of aesthetic and materials, I would love to give some different perspectives.
Job Objective Worksheet
Name: Sherry An
What is your Goal? (Answer last)
After graduating, I would like to work with furniture design related firms who own their own brand, so I can learn from a broader perspective from not only design, but also how to display in a store, who to sell for, how to present an advertisement…etc. Then I’ll be able to give design ideas more appropriate for the market and be more realistic about fabrication individually.
What is your dream company, and what kind of projects do they produce?
IDEE produce furniture, interior accessories, lighting and interior suggestion services.
What is your starting position at the firm?
As a junior furniture designer, I’ll be able to work with other designers who have more experience in this area. Assistant what they are working at and learn the flow of design process.
How does your current skills can contribute to the firm at the initial position?
From my design process, I’m willing to get involved in each of every step, from picking materials, testing mockups, sketching, computer modeling, rendering to final prototyping. Therefore, I can bring effort to the team from all different aspects of design.
What kind of skills are lacking from your current portfolio?
Most of the furniture are made of wood, and IDEE also produces a lot of wood furniture. However, I worked with soft materials more than others. It would be better if I can show the knowledge of wood working and understanding of more typical furniture design.
What kind of skills and experiences do you want to gain from the firm in 3 years?
I would love to be more practical about design manufacturing through my first three years. Getting familiar with the work flow in the company is also important for me. Also, if possible, to get connection with the local artisans and have the chance to cooperate with them through the company will be great.
How do you think the future employer should view your portfolio?
Understand that I can bring a fresh perspective to the design and make our lives easier and better.
